A thorny forest shrub with stiff, woody stems of a dark, reddish-brown, from which numerous sharp, conical thorns protrude. Its small, oval leaves are a dull, dark green, almost leathery. Small, inconspicuous berries, round and deep crimson, ripen in clusters.
