Small Sitka spruce and western hemlock saplings grow from rich, dark soil in a bordered plot. The spruce have thin, smooth trunks and soft green needles; the hemlock have slender, drooping branches with flat needles. Around them sprout low dwarf dogwood and young fireweed. The soil is damp with mulch, and water droplets cling to the leaves. All plants are healthy, small, and reaching toward the light.
