Retopology is the process of creating a new, optimized polygon mesh over the surface of an existing model. It replaces the dense, uneven topology of a sculpt or 3D scan with clean, evenly spaced quads. Those quads deform well and are efficient to render.

How it works

High-poly sculpts and scans often have millions of triangles with messy, animation-hostile topology. Retopology produces a low-poly mesh that follows the form with good edge flow, using loops around joints, eyes, and mouths. That flow lets the model animate cleanly and run in real time. Detail from the original is preserved by baking it into normal and displacement maps applied to the new mesh.
